This was taken from the final Dimestore Outfit show recorded on July 29,
1998 at Gabe’s Oasis in Iowa City. We recorded a lot of that final
show. Performances ranged from the somewhat-inspired to not-unlike-a train-wreck.
When I finally received copies of that night’s performance I only
got the first, roughly, two-thirds of the show. I kept trying to get my
buddy John Svec (who recorded the last show) to get the other bit to me.
He kept procrastinating. I finally realized that he was consciously or
unconsciously trying to keep that last 30-40 minutes from me. Which, now,
seems wise, as I don’t remember the last hour or so of that night
- being sideways with drink. The last half of what I did receive was embarrassing
enough to persuade me to keep the recording securely exiled in the vaults
forever.
Until now. Time, I think, has been generous. It now hits me like a band
celebrating their last show together, letting it all hang out, as they
say. We invited friends to come play with us (ala The Last Waltz) and
had a blast. Listening back to the tapes there was plenty rocking, drinking
and laughing. I think for once I may not have been taking myself so seriously.
That being said, there is a limit to the caterwauling drunkenness that
anyone can listen to. Hopefully, John put the final 30 minutes, which
I never heard, out with Tuesday’s garbage.
This take of Some Other Day was the first song of the
second of three sets. The multiple rounds of whatever shots of booze hadn’t
started coming up from the audience yet, so we still had some command
over our instruments. This particular performance is notable for, firstly,
the guitar solo I took (to be sure a rarity in itself), and secondly that
said guitar solo was relatively benign, and so, no one was injured in
its creation, especially myself. |
